Terrorist investigation opened after arson attacks on police stations

ROME – Two fire bomb attacks on police stations in the Alban Hills south of Rome is now being investigated as a terrorist offence by suspected anarchist groups, police sources said Wednesday.
Security cameras captured a man, dressed all in white, in the early hours of Feb. 9, as he set fire to various vehicles parked in the courtyard of the Carabinieri station in Castel Gandolfo. The fire was soon tamed without the aid of firefighters thanks to the immediate intervention of a soldier but the case was immediately passed from the Vellerenti to the Roman Prosecutor’s Office. The filing states that the arson attack is being treated as an act of terrorism.
The fires were started by a man who scaled the walls of the police station, entered the courtyard and started to pour a flammable liquid everywhere. In but a few moments the entire courtyard burst into flames and 16 vehicles were destroyed. The whole event took place in under 10 minutes and thus went without anyone noticing it. By 3:40 a.m. the fire had been discovered by a group of guards at the entrance and thankfully no-one was in the office buildings at the time.
The only images of the perpetrator showed that he was in a completely white suit, very similar to one of those that would have been worn by a sanitary worker during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
So far, there have been no leads in the case, as the man was unable to be identified from CCTV footage and the model of the getaway car, in which his accomplice waited for him, is unknown. However, the speed and type of action that the man took is consistent with the idea that he may have inspected the area before the fire, according to D.I.G.O.S., the special operations and general investigations unit. Thus, they are now looking at people who have recently visited the building.
