Helicopter crashes in misty conditions in Parma, prosciutto magnate, Lorenzo Rovagnati dies aged 41

ROME – It has been confirmed that after a helicopter crash Tuesday in Parma, near the Castle of Castelguelfo, owned by the Rovagnati family, who made their fortune producing cooked ham, that Lorenzo Rovagnati, 41, along with his two pilots has died.
The businessman had been married to Federica Sironi for 6 years, who is currently expecting their third child.
Rovagnati was the CEO of his family business, founded in 1941 in Brianza by his grandfather Angelo Ferruccio Rovagnati, which produces prosciutto. Today the ‘Gran Biscotto’ brand takes over 300 million euros per year and has over a thousand employees in 20 different countries.
In the last fifteen years, with Lorenzo and his brother Ferruccio at the helm, Rovagnati has been exporting prosciutto across Europe and has even opened their first production plant in the United States.
Rovagnati would return home to Castelguelfo on Wednesdays, while on other days he lived and worked in Milan or in the province of Monza.
The investigations to reconstruct the causes of the accident were being co-oordinated by the coordinated by the local constabulary in Parma.
The National Flight Security Agency has also opened an investigation to establish the cause of the accident and one of their inspector was expected to arrive at the scene to collaborate with the state investigators.
Tuesday night in the area there was dense fog from the afternoon which, together with the darkness, could be among the causes of the tragedy.
According to the first findings, the helicopter was taking off and, perhaps, after an attempt to go higher, the pilots were trying to return to the ground.
The Mayor of Noceto, Fabio Fecci has released a statement on the incident expressing his condolences.
“I had the great pleasure of meeting Lorenzo when he came with his father and for more than 30 years I have known this family and since they settled and purchased the castle of Castelguelfo and built new pig farms.
They had a very strong relationship; they were a family of great humility.
The father was a very simple person, a great entrepreneur and Lorenzo embodied everything that his father.
It is a terrible tragedy that will affect the whole community.
He was so close to us in the all our various social, cultural, recreational parts of life ".
