Eight arrests after attack on homebound Venice fans

Police said the attack injured ten, including two officers

ROME — Fifty-odd Udine and Salzburg ultras and superfans stormed a train carrying Venezia FC supporters on Feb.1, injuring two state police (DIGOS) officers and eight bystanders, judicial sources said.

Police said the mob of ultras boarded the Venice-bound train at Basiliano station hours after Udinese Calcio had bested Venezia 3-1 at the northern team’s home stadium.

Police arrested five Austrians, a Bosnian resident of Austria, one Italian, and an Albanian resident of Udine, and charged the eight men with railway blockade, aggravated battery, resisting a public official, and prohibited use of pyrotechnic devices, judicial sources said.

On Oct. 30 2024, after a 3-2 Venezia win over Udine, Veneto fans beat a group of Udine supporters on the Friulians’ way to Venice’s Santa Lucia Station. Italian media reported that during the Feb. 1 game, Venice fans displayed a banner reminding the Udinese of that attack.
