Schools close in Sicily due to heavy rainfall

ROME – Schools in eastern Sicily were closed Friday due to red alerts for the risk of heavy rainfall, including in the provinces of Catania, Messina and Syracuse. They remained open in Palermo.

The main risk of heavy showers was in the provinces of Messina, Catania, Syracuse, Ragusa, Caltanissetta and Enna.

There could be scattered or widespread rainfall, including showers or thunderstorms on the island, warned regional civil protection.

There were also closures and limited rail services. Sicily was not the only region affected by bad weather.

Cold air at high altitude was causing a progressive worsening of weather conditions also in Sardinia and Calabria, with rain and thunderstorms and an intensification of winds, also extending to Basilicata and Campania.
