Meloni presses Trump on Sala case at Mar-a-Lago, press reports

The American president-elect called Meloni "a fantastic woman"

ROME — On a lightning-quick trip from Ciampino to Mar-a-Lago and back, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni pressed Donald Trump “aggressively” for a prisoner swap to free Cecilia Sala, media reports said.

Iran police detained Sala, a 29-year-old podcast journalist and Il Folio correspondent, three days after Italy arrested an Iranian-Swiss drone engineer in Milan at the United States’ request.

Mohammad Abedini, Najafabadi, the 38-year-old engineer, faces possible extradition to America on charges of supplying weapon parts used in in a Jan. 2024 drone attack which killed three U.S. soldiers on a Jordan military base.

The Prime Minister joined the American president-elect for dinner and the premiere of Eastman Dilemma, a documentary alleging discrimination against Republican lawyers in the wake of Trump’s 2020 election loss, before flying back to Rome. Her trip lasted four hours.

Meloni has “really taken Europe by storm, and everybody else,” Trump said, calling her “a fantastic woman.”

The Italian Prime Minister is set to welcome American president Joe Biden for an official visit to Italy and the Vatican, Jan. 9 to Jan. 12. On Jan. 20 Donald Trump will officially replace Biden in the White House.
