Series of seismic tremors recorded in Naples

NAPLES - The National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology recorded a tremor of 3.4 magnitude at 05:33 this morning in Naples.

Whilst magnitude 3 on the Richter scale is towards the lower end of the spectrum (which measures from 1 to 10), the tremor was strong enough to be noticed by people in several Western areas of Naples - Bagnoli, Agnano and Fuorigrotta.

The earthquake's epicentre was in Pozzuoli, which is located in the Phlegraean Fields - an large volcanic area which frequently experiences seismic activity, and was declared a regional park in 2003.

Whilst authorities have reported no damage to property or life, the archaeological sites in the Phlegraean area have been temporarily closed until the tremors stop.

Since the earthquake this morning, the NIGV has also reported four tremors in the Phlegraean Fields, ranging from 4.1 to 4.7 in magnitude.

The Mayor of the Pozzuoli district Gigi Manzoni made a comment to Adnkronos on the seismic activity.

'I have monitored the situation with the director of the NGIV, who confirmed that the phenomenon is ordinary and has eased, but is certainly not over. Therefore, there is maximum attention from our side and from local institutions, as we continue to carry out the measures outlined in decrees, doing everything that needs to be done on the ground."
