Last survivor of Via Tasso Gestapo prison dies at 104

ROME - Iole Mancini, who fought against fascist forces in occupied Rome, has died at 104 years old, reports the National Association of Partisans.

Mancini's death was announced by ANPI on Monday with the message 'Farewell Iole, you will be sorely missed'.

Mancini was the last survivor of the Via Tasso prison in Rome, where antifascists were detained and tortured by the Nazi forces which occupied the city in 1943.

She told her life story as a member of the antifascist 'GAP' group in her book 'A Partisan Love', which was written in collaboration with the journalist Concetto Vecchio.

Deputy leader of the Democratic Party Laura Boldrini issued a statement praising the resilience of Mancini, who never gave in to the torture and inquisition of the Nazis

'Iole Mancini leaves a great hole in the hearts of those who had known her and her story... Her passion for civic duty and her love for democracy never once left her'. (Source: Il Fatto Quotidiano)
