Roman police officer killed in smash between two police patrol cars

ROME - Amar Kudin, a 32-year-old police officer, has died following the collision of two police cars early on Monday morning, police said. Around 5 a.m., the two vehicles crashed at an intersection in the Torrevecchia neighbourhood in Rome's outskirts. Kudin was pronounced dead on the scene, whilst all other people involved have been hospitalised for serious injuries.

Kudin was in the vehicle from the Primavalle station, driven by Giada G., alongside a man who they had arrested on suspicion of theft. Both are in hospital with serious injuries, the police said. They collided with another police car from Volanti, which was responding to reports of a fight nearby, in which both officers, Carmine D'A and Daniele G. were severely injured.

It is suspected that, upon collision, both vehicles were thrown into a wall, which then made them flip over. Bystanders immediately rushed to the scene to help the five involved.

Tributes have flooded in this morning to commemorate Amar, a dedicated police officer and talented amateur rugby player.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella said he is 'deeply saddened' by the incident, offering condolences to Kudin's family and wishing a speedy recovery for the other injured people. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni echoed Mattarella's sentiments, and extended her support for Rome's police force at this time of tragedy.
