Gladiator reenactment sparks outrage within the Campidoglio

ROME - The gladitorial reenactment held in the Colosseum and sponsored by Airbnb, has caused a dispute within the council of the Campidoglio.

In promotion for the new movie Gladiator 2, and a 1.5-million-dollar donation from Airbnb, the Colosseum will be hosting a two-day exclusive event where tourists are able to dress up in historically accurate gladiator costumes and train for combat.

An agreement was eventually reached between the Archeological Park, the Association of Ars Dimicandi, and Airbnb, to host this event after hesitation from the public department. There was pushback for the event from the Department of Culture and parts of the council of Campidoglio, as they were worried that it would transform the Colosseum into an “amusement park”. After promise by the Archeological Park that the event would bring in more money for the histroical sites of Rome and an appreciation for Italian culture, they agreed. The Park reiterated their goal of the event by stating, “The collaboration aims to combine conservation, education, and innovation to bring an even wider audience closer to the cultural richness of the Amphitheater.”

The listing for the experience can be found through Airbnb's website, Airbnb.com/gladiatormovie. The chance to sign up begins on the 27 of November at 3pm ET and ends 10 of December at 8:59 am ET. Only 16 lucky warriors will get chosen for battle. The event will last from the 7 of May until the 8 of May for three hours per day. Tourists will be given the chance to assume the identity of famous gladiators and retrace the historical steps of past warriors like Maximus. They will be trained in combat and go head-to-head with the other participants until the judge decides their fate.
