Italian Mafia boss arrested in Colombia

ROME - On Monday in Medellin great relief was felt internationally when Colombian police arrested Italian Mafia boss Gustavo Nocella, thus bringing to an end the six month operation trying to track down his presence in South America.
Nocella, who operated by the pseudonym 'Ermes', is considered to be the main connection between Colombian drug producers and the Italian Mafia clans which distribute them. His arrest was announced on X by Colombian president Gustavo Petro, who said that special forces received his location from Interpol, who in turn received the call from the Neapolitan DDA (anti-mafia organisation).
The arrest was the culmination of six months of investigations under Operation Minerva - a collaborative effort between Interpol, Italian, Colombian and British police forces to locate Nocella after they first received news of his trafficking business operating out of Colombia.
Officials around the world, from South America to Europe, hope that the arrest of one of Italy's most powerful Mafia bosses will deal a significant blow to in the never-ending fight against international drug networks.
