Pope Francis says Italy needs to beat itself up for having cats and dogs not children

Pope Francis embraces a child

VATICAN CITY – In a speech to the Delegation of The Economy of Francesco in the Paul VI Hall, Pope Francis criticised the privileged nature of Italy for having pets rather than children. In his speech the Pontiff said: “I see that there are some children here: this is beautiful, in a culture where it is a privilege to have dogs or cats and not children. We have to beat up Italy a bit! Believe me: it's worth spending your life to change the world for the better. Come on!"

This is not the first time Pope Francis has turned to this issue. In May he made a similar speech saying: “These rich countries do not have children: everyone has a dog, a cat, everyone, but they don't have children... without children and young people, a country loses its desire for the future.”

During his speech on Wednesday the Pontiff also asked for prayers for his trip to Luxembourg and Belgium: “Tomorrow I will leave for Luxembourg and Belgium, I ask you to pray for me and for the fruits of this apostolic journey to the heart of Western Europe.”
