Cheesy wedding solves financial pickle: the viral video of a McDonald's wedding reception
ROME -- For many engaged couples, the idea of getting married in Italy is a dream. From iconic landmarks to quaint towns steeped in history, many couples could only wish to bring a flavour of la dolce vita to their special day. But one Italian couple has gone viral on social media for swapping golden monuments for the Golden Arches.
Michele and Ilary were filmed last week having their wedding reception at a McDonald’s in Montoro, in Campania’s Avellino province. The video, filmed and shared by comedian and impersonator Enzo Costanza, has since been viewed by millions of people. The pair are seen eating burgers and chips with family and friends, with images of them smiling and celebrating the occasion also shared by the Avellino branch of the fast food chain.
Responding to a question in the video about why the couple decided to hold their wedding reception in a fast food restaurant, Michele says, “We did it because we don’t have much money.”
"Our message is this," Michele says in an interview with Costanza, "even if you don't have money, if you don't have family that supports you [financially] like us...do it, because love wins over everything."
The mayor of Montoro, Salvatore Carratù, also explained it was not the first time a couple had celebrated their marriage in the fast food restaurant.
"I found out [about the reception] after reading the news online. I was told the couple later brought together their family and friends [to celebrate] in a restaurant."
