Passengers evacuated after Corsica ferry fire, no one injured

Around 300 passengers were evacuated from the ferry on Tuesday afternoon

ROME -- Around 300 passengers were evacuated on Tuesday from a ferry boat heading to the island of Elba after a fire broke out in the boat’s engine room. No one was injured, Livorno’s maritime administration has said.

The Corsica Express Three ferry, which set sail from the port of Piombino at around 3:15 p.m., was evacuated around fifteen minutes later when smoke started to emerge from the vehicle’s engine room. The ferry, carrying 274 passengers, returned to the port of Piombino before passengers were evacuated. The fire caused damages to the ferry's main exit but passengers were evacuated through emergency routes.

One passenger suffered minor grazes as a result of a panic attack, while another was treated at Piombino’s accident and emergency unit for a minor burn caused by the emergency exit ramp.
