Two families evacuated as fires blaze again in Artena

Fire services worked throughout the night to put out the blazes

ROME -- Two families were evacuated on Monday evening as another fire broke out in Rome. The fire has since been put out and there is no immediate danger, the mayor of Artena has said.

The blaze swept through the province of Artena, in the southeast of the capital, around 5:00 p.m. on Monday, as fire services worked throughout the night to put the fire out. Two families living close to the blazes were evacuated as a precaution.

Artena has seen several fires break out over the past week, destroying land within the territory. On Sunday, emergency services responded to fires in the Selvatico area which spread towards the small town’s historic centre. Fire services have increased their presence across Artena, with helicopters also on standby.

Although fires have been common in the province in recent years, the mayor of Artena, Silvia Caroccia, condemned criminal acts which have caused fires in recent days.

“We’ll be discussing measures we can adopt, and we will intervene because only criminals put the lives and safety of people at risk. Only criminals start fires.”
