Chinese tourist killed in A1 coach crash, with 25 injured
ROME -- Investigations are still ongoing after a coach of tourists crashed on the A1 on Sunday, killing one Chinese person and leaving two others in a critical condition. Italian highway patrol, as well as Arezzo's public prosecution office, have said they have opened an investigation into what caused the collision.
The coach, reportedly carrying Chinese tourists, was travelling from Rome to Florence when it collided with a crash barrier near Badia al Pino. 25 people are believed to have been injured and a Chinese man has died, although his identity or age is not known at this stage. It is unclear why the vehicle swerved off the road and into the crash barrier, which broke the coach windscreen.
Emergency services responded quickly to the crash, which happened around 17:00, with the injured tourists taken to hospitals in Arezzo, Siena and Valdarno. The road was initially closed at 5:30 p.m. but was reopened after 20 minutes.
The driver has allegedly been questioned this afternoon by the public prosecutor Angela Masiello as police attempt to establish how the vehicle crashed.
The accident followed another serious incident on the A1 earlier on Sunday, when a 59-year-old woman died and her husband was injured after their car came off the road. The couple, travelling towards Rome, crashed around 5:30 before emergency services arrived on the scene.
