A convict is released from prison and disfigures his partner with acid.
SORBOLO MEZZANI - The Carabinieri of Parma intervened in a condominium in Sorbolo Mezzani following an assault against a woman, alerted by a passerby.
A 54-year-old woman was the victim of a brutal attack by her partner and father of their two adult children.
The man, a 61-year-old inmate who had been imprisoned for several years in the Parma prison, had been granted semi-liberty with the possibility of leaving for varying periods of time to work and meet loved ones, with the obligation to return and spend the night in prison.
After having dinner with his partner and daughter, he allegedly started arguing with the woman over trivial reasons. He then grabbed a bottle of acid and emptied it over his partner's head, who was subsequently stabbed in the side.
The desperate screams of those present to call the Carabinieri and the approaching sirens caused the man to flee the area.
According to the Carabinieri's reconstruction, after the attack on his partner at the height of an argument, the man drove away in a car. A manhunt ensued: info-investigative analysis, based on family connections and monitoring of various optical license plate readers, allowed the presumed direction of his escape to be identified.
The Carabinieri of Parma therefore began pursuing the alleged perpetrator, and the search also involved the relevant police and highway patrol commands along the identified route. Until the fugitive's vehicle was intercepted and stopped, after a 300-kilometer chase through the provinces of Parma, Florence, and Arezzo, finally being blocked near the Badia al Pino service station, near the Arezzo exit. He did not resist.
He is now at the San Benedetto prison in Arezzo at the disposal of the judicial authority. The man has been arrested on charges of escape, aggravated attempted murder, and disfigurement of a person through permanent facial injuries.
The woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition, is in critical condition, and under observation in a dedicated area of the Emergency Room. The victim is not in danger of death.
She is now awake and has burns mainly to her face, judged to be healable within 10-15 days. She may be discharged in the coming days, perhaps as early as tomorrow.
