Alfredo Cospito, definitively sentenced to 23 years for the attack on the former Carabinieri barracks

FOSSANO - The final sentences of 23 years and 17 years and 9 months in prison for anarchists Alfredo Cospito and Anna Beniamino have been confirmed. This decision was made by the Cassation Court in the context of the trial for the 2006 attack on the former Carabinieri barracks in Fossano. The attack, which occurred on June 2nd, fortunately did not cause any casualties due to a stroke of luck. Claimed under the acronym 'Rivolta Animale e Tremenda/Federazione Anarchica Informale', it involved the use of two devices, one of lesser power - intended as a distraction - and another, timed, with high potential. Cospito has consistently maintained that these were "two demonstrative attacks in the dead of night, in deserted places, which were not intended and could not have harmed or killed anyone."

In particular, the judges, in accordance with the request made today by the deputy prosecutor general Perla Lori, rejected the appeal of the Turin prosecutor's office, which sought a life sentence with daytime isolation for 12 months for Cospito, and 27 years and one month for Beniamino.

Cospito is currently detained under the 41-bis regime at the Sassari prison, where he returned in June after spending over four months in the Opera penitentiary. He had been transferred to Milan due to health reasons arising from the hunger strike he underwent - from October 20, 2022, to April 19, 2023 - in protest against the harsh prison regime.

In the reasoning behind the Appeals Court's judgment, the judges in Turin wrote that the 2006 action was "a serious terrorist act" but had "very modest" repercussions. A "political massacre," certainly, but without victims or significant damage, and therefore it must be considered of "minor importance."

The Cassation hearing was preceded by solidarity actions for Cospito and Beniamino carried out by some anarchist militants: several blitzes in Rome saw dumpsters set on fire and the windows of some banks and ATMs damaged. These actions took place in the Tuscolano district where a car was also damaged, and graffiti reading "Anna and Alfredo free" appeared on the walls.
