Pompeii visitors receive tour of excavation areas from park director

Gabriel Zuchtriegel

ROME – Visitors to Pompeii received a guided tour of the area from Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of the Archaeological Park of Pompei, sources said.

A workers’ union meeting on Tuesday, which involved nearly all the workers at Pompeii, meant that the usual 9 a.m. opening time was delayed until 10:30 a.m. Only certain areas of the park were open until midday due to a lack of security.

However, the German director, Zuchtriegel, and other officials took tourists on guided tours around the Villa of Mysteries and Diomede’s Villa, both of which are still being excavated. The initiative was to ensure that visitors received the best possible reception while opening was limited.

The visitors were taken to areas of the villas where current works are underway, seeing never seen before frescos and rooms of Pompeii.
