Meloni speaks to Biden, reiterates support for Ukraine

 ROME – Newly inaugurated Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a phone call with United States President Joe Biden, discussing the challenges faced by both nations and reaffirming their support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, Palazzo Chigi said.

 The leaders spoke to each other Tuesday evening to strengthen ties between the countries and to address national and international issues, with Biden congratulating Meloni on her recent appointment. 

 A note from Palazzo Chigi stated “Premier Meloni thanked President Biden for his congratulations and reaffirmed the deep friendship linking Italy and the United States.”

 The official release from the White House said: “The leaders underscored the strong relationship between the United States and Italy, and expressed their readiness to work together within the transatlantic alliance to address common challenges. They discussed their commitment to continue providing assistance to Ukraine, holding Russia accountable for its aggression, addressing the challenges posed by China, and ensuring sustainable and affordable energy resources.”
