Extreme weather wreaks havoc throughout Italy

ROME - Three regions have issued weather warnings after predictions of snow and ice throughout Italy, with polar conditions already having caused much damage over the weekend.

Freezing temperatures swept the country, with Cortina, in Veneto, reaching -14˚C, and San Giacomo in Alto-Adige recording a low of -28˚C, the coldest since records began in 2010. Conditions are looking likely to continue this week.

Rough conditions at sea have isolated the island of Capri, as well as the Aeolian Islands off Sicily.

Many schools, particularly in the south, have been closed by local authorities due to the bad weather.

Fire services in the worst hit regions of Tuscany and Campania have seen a huge rise in activity, having to move snow and hundreds of collapsed trees from the roads.

The village of Caggiano, in Salerno, home to 2,700 inhabitants, was without running water for an entire night after ice damaged a water pipe in the region.

One person has died and several were injured after ice caused a 20 car pile-up on the A32 in the Valle di Susa in Piedmont, with the road having to be closed in both directions.

A parish in Lamezia Terme decided on Sunday night to open various premises over night to house the homeless out of the cold.
