Carabiniere sentenced to four years for rape of U.S. students

FLORENCE - Marco Camuffo, one of two Carabinieri convicted of the rape of two American students in Florence, has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison on appeal.

Camuffo and Pietro Costa, both Carabinieri, were convicted of raping two American students on the night of the Sept. 6, 2017, after meeting them outside a night club by the Piazzale Michelangelo and bringing them home in their service car. The two Carabinieri maintained that that the sex was consensual, but it was argued by the prosecution that the girls were too drunk and the officers abused their position.

Pietro Costa was sentenced to five years and six months last February, but Camuffo appealed his original sentence, made in an abbreviated trial, of four years and eight months. The appeal court confirmed the original decision, though removed two months as Camuffo had already been condemned by a military tribunal for the violation of his duties as an officer.
