China Foreign Minister visits Rome
ROME - THe Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi has visited Rome and discussed Hong Kong with Italian counterpart Luigi di Maio, foreign ministry sources said.
Speaking in a joint press conference after their meeting, Italian Foreign Minister commented that in Hong Kong “it is indispensable to preserve the high degree of autonomy and freedom.” Meanwwhile Wang defended the Chinese influence in Hong Kong, “I told him that the reason for the security law is to fix the faults that had existed for many years and to fight the violent acts that are happening everywhere on the island.”
Wang Yi’s visit had sparked protest in Italy with regards to the Hong Kong issue, and pro-democracy activist Nathan Law criticised the Italian government saying it should be “more assertive” with China. Former four-time Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party and the Radicals also protested the visit.
The Chinese minister is in Italy on a European tour and he discussed with Di Maio both the China Belt and Road Initiative or ‘New Silk Road’, and post-Covid scenarios, the sources said.
