Charity event to help prisons affected by pandemic

ROME -- The Catholic social group, the Community of Sant’Egidio, have organized a solidarity campaign for Roman prisons, including watermelon feasts for prisoners.

As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, prisoners faced increased isolation and less contact with the outside world. The Community of Sant’Egidio have therefore arranged a watermelon feast for prisoners on Sunday, 30 July, from 11:30 in Regina Coeli prison. Two more watermelon eating events will be held at other prisons in Rome in August.

The event will not only be a celebration, and a defence against the Summer heat, but a reminder of the importance of charity and rehabilitation in society in such a difficult time. The 'Watermelon feast for solidarity' which will follow health guidelines, has been made possible due to the collaboration and contribution of the Food farming Centre of Rome (CAR).
