SARNO – The mayor of a Campania town has ordered the precautionary measure of evacuating residents due to the risk of landslides.

The evacuation of 200 residents from Sarno, near Salerno, was ordered at 9 a.m. Tuesday by mayor Giuseppe Canfora.

On Sunday night, the streets of the old town flooded with mud and debris from the slope of Mt Saretto, itself devastated by fire on Sept. 20.  An orange weather warning for the area was issued for Tuesday and Wednesday, reported La Repubblica.

In 1998, over 150 people were killed by landslides in the area, triggered by torrential rain and a lack of environmental protection.
