SCILLA (REGGIO CALABRIA) – Luigi Vazzana, 28, fell asleep on a lilo in Scilla, Calabria, drifted out to sea and was rescued by the coastguard after a six-hour search.

It was previously reported he had woken up near Messina, on the Sicilian coast.  The Corriere della Sera, however, has since said that he was actually found further down the Calabrian coast, and that the first report was a mistake.

Vazzana’s friends having raised the alarm at 19.15, four rescue boats headed out from Reggio Calabria while a coastguard helicopter set off from Catania.  A careful search of the sea around Scilla did not find him until 01.00.

Since his rescue, he has criticised the coastguard.

“I do not understand why they did not find me earlier, I was dying of cold,” said Vazzana.  “I did not think I was going to die by drowning, more by hypothermia.”
