Austrian tourist allegedly attacks Intercity train conductor

GENOA - The Intercity Leghorn-Milan train has arrived four hours late following two breakdowns and an alleged attack on the conductor. The train had stopped at Arquata Scrivia following the breakdown of the engine, which had already been replaced at Genoa Pontedecimo. A tourist then assaulted the conductor. The 118 emergency medical service and the railway police were called.

The train left Leghorn at 6:52, but owing to a fault a new engine was swapped in at Genoa Pontedecimo, meaning that the train was running nearly two hours late.  The second engine also broke down, and the train stopped at Arquata Scrivia. Several passengers reported that an Austrian tourist attacked the conductor, insulting him, slapping him and spitting in his face, according to Il Messaggero. The conductor is expected to file a complaint.

The train appears to have left Arquata Scrivia without further problems, and finally arrived at Milan at 14:51.  This follows several days of issues on the railway network. On Sunday a truck lost its load onto the tracks, causing delays and on Friday, 23 trains were cancelled due to staff being ill or on leave.
