CAMPOBASSO - Specialist military doctors are set to be brought in in hospitals across Molise due to a severe shortage of medical staff in the reason, according to Health Commissioner Angelo Giustini.

Giustini said that the military clinicians could start working as early as Wednesday and may be employed for up to, and in some cases more than, five months such is the scarcity of medical professionals in the Adriatic region. Giusitini added that it was only with this military support that the citizens’ right to health access could be ensured.

A recent cabinet meeting in the Italian Ministry of Defence identified 105 military doctors that would be able to help alleviate the strain on the region’s resources.

Molise finds itself in crisis as a result of 12 years of reckless spending in the health sector which has seen the region accumulate circa 22 million euros of debt, ANSA reports. The sector’s poor planning has led to a lack of specialists in the field.

“The nightmare of more wards closing could soon become a reality,” Giustini has since warned.

The Ministry of Health is now set to meet in an attempt to breathe new life into the stagnant sector and ensure local citizens receive the care they require.
