Acclaimed Trasimeno Music Festival returns

Concerts will be hosted against a string of stunning Umbrian backdrops

PERUGIA - The Trasimeno Music Festival is returning to Italy for a 15th edition this summer under the artistic direction of world-famous pianist Angela Hewitt, who will headline the event.

Hewitt will also be joined by some of the most sought-after musicians and most hotly tipped budding talents on the classical music circuit. Performances will be held in locations such as the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, the Castle of the Knights of Malta in Magione, and the Signorelli Theatre in Cortona.

Speaking before the event, Hewitt told press: “"Bringing together an event like this is not an easy task. In fact, I would have given up some time ago had it not been for the tremendous enthusiasm of the very affectionate music lovers who return to Umbria from all corners of the world every year to attend the festival. It is thanks to their warmth and their valuable financial support that we are able to continue, so I would like to dedicate this anniversary to them, a small token of my immense gratitude.”

“An important part of my work as artistic director is to combine music with the surrounding environment, so that the listener can have a totally immersive experience. This year's inaugural evening is a perfect example: Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle will be performed in the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, one of the most majestic places of worship in the world.

“A heartfelt thanks must go to the institutions, partners, private sponsors, suppliers, staff and volunteers, and to all those who allow us to put on this festival, who have made it such a significant part of my life."

The festival will be held between June 29 and July 5. It will also include a series of debates, free performances by youth orchestras, and a discussion and film presentation hosted by English author Ian McEwan.
