LOMBARDY - 19 arrests have been made in Lombardy and Calabria in connection with ‘Ndrangheta activity in the Northern region.

The arrests took place on Monday morning on account of alleged aggravated extortion, damage by fire, and accounts of money laundering.

It is thought that the case involves incidents dating back to 2015 primarily related to the transport of fruit and vegetable goods.

The National Anti-Mafia Attorney, Cafiero De Raho, spoke out after the arrests, stating: “From this inquest emerges the presence of a ‘Ndrangheta cell which operated stably in the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia.”

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini added his own thoughts on the matter while on a visit to Bergamo this morning. “It is important to always keep your eyes peeled […] wherever there is money there are criminals” he said, before going on to thank the efforts of local police forces who were able to clamp down on the organised crime group.
