PALERMO – Sicilian police on Tuesday followed up on arrest warrants issued by prosecutors for members of the reformed ‘cupola’ of the infamous mafia clan ‘Cosa Nostra,’ taking multiple individuals into custody.

Among those arrested were Leonardo Greco, the grandson of the clan’s top brass Michele, and Calogero Lo Piccolo, son of a clan boss Salvatore, who is currently serving a life-sentence in prison.

Attempts to reform the highest levels of the Sicilian Mafia were discovered in December when 47 people were detained in a different operation.

Two detainees in the December operation reportedly became witnesses for prosecutors, leading to Tuesday’s arrests. Filippo Colletti and Filippo Bisconti gave crucial evidence confirming the reorganisation of the mafia clan, revealing the new internal dynamics of the ‘cupola.’
