Tortoise rescued from traffic danger

ROME – Traffic police have saved a tortoise on the motorway Roma-Fiumicino as he slowly crossed the emergency lane on Tuesday morning, local authorities have reported.

The agents of the traffic police department at Roma Settebagni carried out the rescue mission on the motorway near the service area Magliana Sud, saving from a dangerous situation an “average-sized tortoise” of the protected category “Emys Orbicularis”.

The tortoise, wounded following a collision, had many fractures to the back of his shell. On seeing this, police quickly requested treatment and contacted The Environmental Authority who, after having examined the health conditions of the protected specimen, who was 15 years old, transported him immediately to a specialised veterinary centre.
