Populist italian government tells migrants 'pack your bags'

ROME - Italy's populist government has announced that illegal immigrants must "get ready to pack their bags" as one African was shot and killed and two others wounded in a suspected racist attack in the southern region of Calabria.
Firebrand Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, speaking as head of the anti-migrant League party, also set off a storm Saturday by saying that Italy will no longer allow ships sailed by NGOs to carry out rescue operations in the Mediterranean. Critics said this would mean leaving shipwrecked migrants to drown.
"We will take back our country," Salvini told a rally in Vicenza, "the gravy train is over for illegal immigrants, get ready to pack your bags. It will be done in a good mannered and tranquil way, but they must go."
Salvini was travelling Sunday to Sicily to visit a 'hotspot' migrant reception centre at the town of Pozzallo wher 158 illegal migrants from Tunisia landed Saturday.
In the southern town of San Calogero unknown gunmen shot and killed a 29-year-old man from Mali Saturday night and wounded two other foreigners.
