Rome sees arrival of 50 new refugees

ROME - Wednesday morning saw the arrival of a new group of refugees in Rome.

Originally from the Horn of Africa, the group of 50 refugees landed in Fiumicino airport, having flown from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Their arrival in Rome is thanks to the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Italian Episcopal Conference, following an agreement signed together with the Italian State.

Within the group, there were children and many people requiring urgent health care for illnesses caused by the poor living conditions in their previous refugee camps and makeshift housing.

The refugees are due to be received in regions such as Puglia, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Liguria, and Sicily, where they can access health facilities and begin their integration into Italian society, by learning Italian and attending school.

This latest welcome was completely orchestrated and facilitated by the Italian Episcopal Conference, thanks to the funds raised by the Community of Sant'Egidio.

It was also made possible through the actions of the citizens who offered their time as volunteers and opened their homes as part of the effort to enable the arrival of these refugees.
