Italian Navy vessel showcased in public visits

ROME – The Italian Navy’s European Multi Mission Frigate (FREMM), Virginio Fasan, was set to open its doors to the public Saturday and Sunday whilst moored at the port of Civitavecchia. The short pause brings an end to its 10-day Mare Aperto exercise in the central Mediterranean.

 The navy programme was carried out alongside other national defence forces and NATO members, hoping to promote a more coordinated effort towards safeguarding national interests.

 The frigate is equipped with pioneering technology and engineering which can be utilised by a highly-trained crew to provide humanitarian aid during natural disasters.

 Fitted with cutting-edge technology, the ship boasts an anti-submarine configuration, the first of its kind, having been set up by Fincantieri with the support of other companies from the Finmeccanica group.

 On Dec 19, 2013 the Italian Navy took full control of the vessel which is currently employed by the 1st Naval Division Command, based in La Spezia.

 Throughout the training programme the frigate tackled air defence exercises, with the aim of combatting illegal traffic and underwater surveillance, whilst upholding freedom of navigation and national defence.

 Visits on-board the vessel will take place at the following times:

 Saturday May 19 from 15.00 to 18.00;

 Sunday, May 20 from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 15.00 to 18.00.
