Veneto votes overwhelmingly for autonomy

Veneto region governor Luca Zaia

VENICE -- Supporters of Northern League Veneto governor Luca Zaia celebrated victory Monday after 57.2 percent turnout in referendum held Sunday on obtaining greater autonomy from Rome with 98.1 percent of voters casting yes ballots.

But in neighbouring Lombardy only 39.5 percent of the electorate cast ballots in the consultative referendum on autonomy for the region including Milan, a lacklustre result for regional governor Roberto Maroni.  The Italian government said it is willing to discuss greater autonomy for the regions but not fiscal autonomy.
