‘Ndrangheta gang member captured in Holland

Gioacchino Bonarrigo

ROME- A member of the notorious Mafia gang has been arrested on the run in the Netherlands, after having evaded police capture since 2011. The 33-year-old man, believed to be a member of the Bellocchio clan, was stopped in Amsterdam and had apparently been using false papers, allowing him to move around Europe unnoticed it was reported Thursday.

Gioacchino Bonarrigo, known as “the gypsy” to his friends, comes originally from Cinquefrondi, in Calabria. He has been a fugitive since 2011, when he escaped from house arrest and has had a European arrest warrant for the past year. This was issued by the District Directorate of Reggio Calabria (headed up by the Attorney General Federico Cafiero De Raho). His offenses committed include international drug trafficking.

Police from Holland and carabinieri from Reggio finally captured Bonarrigo in the street having followed him all day. Il Fatto Quotidiano reports that he can now apparently expect 2 years and 19 days of prison sentence for his crimes.

According to investigators, Bonarrigo has engaged in criminal activity for some time. Indeed, in August 2007, he was found in possession of two guns for which he recieved a prison sentence of 3 years and 6 months.
