Lula and Dilma charged in high court

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff

RIO DI JANEIRO- Brazilian Attorney General Rodrigo Janot has brought charges with the Supreme Court against the former presidents of the Republic, Dilma Rousseff and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, under whose government the current head of the FAO, José Graziano da Silva, was a minister.

The investigation is taking place in the context of the investigation by Lava Jato regarding the black funds Petrobras, and the local group of the Mani Pulite. Lula and Dilma, along with other six major members of their Workers' Party, have also been charged with being associated to the crimes.

According to Janot, there are strong indications that the Lula-based Workers Party has formed a "criminal organization" to divert money from the state oil giant, Petrobras. It is reported that, between 2002 and 2016, the accused received bribes for a total of 1.5 billion reais (which is equivalent to over 400 million euros).

The Attorney General further commented that, as far as he was concerned, Lula was "the man behind the creation of this criminal organization."
