All four rapists captured

Rimini beach

RIMINI- The last member of the gang who attacked a Polish couple on the beach Aug. 25 has been found. Two members of the group turned themselves in to the police and a third was caught Saturday. The fourth young man was finally stopped Sunday morning.

The 20-year-old man, Guerlin Butungu, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo and a resident in Vallefoglia, was found hiding in the train station at Rimini, reports Il Messaggero. He is thought to be the leader of the gang and was finally found by Sco agents and the Police forces of Rimini and Pesaro early Sunday morning.

The young man had been trying to flee from Pesaro, by taking a train, but members of the mobile police team had been monitoring his movements and were able to stop the train as it came into Rimini station. The man was found in one of the carriages.

Footage from surveillance cameras helped the police to identify the four young immigrants. Police agent Maurizio Improta commented: “this morning’s arrest was doubly satisfying because the officers who handcuffed the attacker were female. It was a symbolic gesture of justice for the victims of the attack”. He also mentioned that the result had been achieved because of the hard work of the team.

The other three, all minors, have been accused of rape. They consist of two Moroccan brothers, aged 15 and 17, and a Nigerian, aged 16. They have been taken to a centre for juvenile offenders in Bologna, via del Pratello. Reprisenting them is a lawyer who specialises in young offenders, Silvia Marzocchi.

The two brothers from Morocco were the first to turn themselves in, apparently having decided to do so after news and videos of the attack was widely circulated in the media. They too are residents at Vallefoglia. Later on Saturday, the police were successful in catching the third attacker, who is of Nigerian nationality.

The brothers admitted to having taken part in the rape of the Polish 26-year-old and to having beaten up her boyfriend. However, they would not take full responsibility for the attack, suggesting that it was in fact instigated by their Nigerian and Congolese accomplices.
