Naples prosecutor considering investigation post quake

NAPLES - Naples’ Public Prosecutor Office is considering the possibility of opening an investigation against yet unknown culprits for miscalculation, disaster and multiple deaths due to the damage caused by the earthquake that took place on Tuesday night on the island of Ischia.

“I am currently evaluating various options,” said Giovanni Melillo, head of the Naples Prosecutor’s Office, to 6 su Radio 1. He specified that this is a “complex and in-depth need for insights.”

The Neapolitan Public Prosecutor is awaiting two reports, from the Civil Protection and the Fire Brigade, which he requested in a cognitive investigation of what happened on August 21, following the earthquake that caused two deaths.

On the possible link between the phenomenon of building upbuilding and the collapse of some buildings on the island, the head of the Naples Public Prosecutor said: "The social costs, even on these occasions, are not outweighed by serious phenomena such as the Illegal construction and unauthorised buildings.”

Unauthorised buildings is one of the priorities of the work of the Prosecution of the Republic of Naples; a phenomenon that in Campania has extraordinarily serious dimensions and as such should be addressed."

The Civil Protection chief had talked about "making buildings with poor materials”, as the region of Campania adds 2.5 million euros to the budget to pay for First Aid interventions. President of the region Vincenzo De Luca maintained "There is no link between the collapse and illegal buildings”, while the Mayor of Ischia defended his island: "We are not a community of illegal buildings.”
