Weekend heatwave to sweep Italy, 40 degrees in South

ROME- A heatwave is expected to sweep through Italy for the second last weekend of July, with temperatures surpassing 40 degrees in the South, according to an online weather forecast.

The anticyclone Caronte will bring sunny, hot and humid conditions to the whole of the country. By the end of Friday, said the editorial staff at iLMeteo.it, unstable currents are expected to arrive from France and reach the northern part of Italy. Storms will be seen throughout Piedmonte, Lombardy and towards Trentino Alto Adige and western Veneto during the day, whereas it will be sunny and hot elsewhere.

Antonio Sanò, director and founder of the website iLMeteo.it, confirmed a period of intense heat for the weekend of July 21-23. He said that maximum temperatures for lowlands will average at 33-37 degrees for the whole country, although there will be peaks of 38-39 degrees, and even 40 degrees and more, in the most southern areas and on islands. However, from Monday onwards in the North and for the following few days in the rest of Italy, “there will be an end to the heatwave, due to the arrival of more temperature and variable winds from the north Atlantic towards our basin”.

From Monday, however, it is predicted that there will be a drastic change in the weather.  An intense and changing front is forecast to cross Northern Italy carrying widespread and strong storms with it. Cloudbursts, hail and a drop in temperature are to be expected, especially around the central and eastern part. Lower temperatures are predicted for the whole of Italy between July 25 and 27, which could fall as low as 7-8 degrees in the South. Storms are expected in Central Italy, especially in the area’s stretch of Apennine mountains.
