Referendum 'No' throws Alitalia into chaos

Workers' protest banners

ROME-- Alitalia faces liquidation after workers overwhelmingly voted no in the recent referendum proposing serious restructuring of the company.

Gentiloni has confirmed that it is impossible that the company will be nationalised, and refuses to use tax payers' money to prop it up.

The company board will meet on Monday- likely to be put under special administration, headed either by Luigi Gubitosi or Enrico Laghi, which could be a way stage to liquidation if it proves impossible to find an emergency solution.

The government will inject 300 million euros into the company, but only over a period of six months, in order to avoid bankruptcy.

The Economic Development Minister Carlo Calenda stated, “there is no turning back. We will not ask tax payers to bail the company out.”

In the meantime, there will be no changes to the airline's flight schedule, though RyanAir, Lufthansa and Easyjet are keen to snap up any left over staff at a cheaper price.
