Juventus to face Monaco in UCL semi-finals

NYON—Leaders of the Italian Serie A, Juventus, will face the leaders of France’s Ligue 1, Monaco, in a heavyweight clash in the semi-finals of the 2017 UEFA Champions League.

The draw was made Friday morning and will also see Atletico Madrid take on the holders Real Madrid in a repeat of last year’s final.

Juventus, who comfortably overcame Catalan giants Barcelona in a 3-0 aggregate win in the quarter-finals, will be hoping to keep up their incredible defensive record against high-scoring Monaco in the next round.

The first leg will be played on May 2 and 3, with the return fixtures taking place the following week.

Juventus and Monaco have met in the semi-finals of the Champions League just once before, in 1998. The French side got the better of the Bianconeri in the first-leg, winning 3-2 thanks to a goal from a young Thierry Henry. However, Juventus bounced back in the second-leg with a 4-1 victory and a hat-trick from the iconic Alessandro del Piero to send them through to the final.

The Bianconeri are on course for their sixth successive Scudetto title in Serie A, but would dearly love to end their 21-year-drought in Europe by lifiting the Champions League trophy for a third time in Cardiff.
