Thieves steal 13,000 euro from San Gennaro collection

Donations stolen only days after the Feast of San Januarius

NAPLES -- Just a few days after the celebrations for the Patron Saint of Naples, the Feast of San Gennaro, a shocking discovery has emerged – 13,000 euros donated to the Church by loyal devotees have been stolen.

Every year, the ‘miracle of San Gennaro’ fascinates a captivated audience in this volcanic city, as crowds flock to witness the highly anticipated liquidation of the blood of the saint. Relics, including bone fragments and blood samples, are traditionally taken in procession to the Monastery of Santa Chiara. After a period of repeated prayers and worship by living relatives of the saint, the blood -- initially brought in solid form -- liquefies.

The vials containing the blood cannot be opened as the Church forbids it, hence close scientific analysis cannot be undertaken. However, scientists note that whilst it is possible for clotted blood to be liquefied, it remains a mystery as to how it solidifies again. The repeated solidification and liquidation defies explanation, thus being labelled a ‘miracle.’

This year on the other hand, a further occurrence leaves us baffled. All the money raised over the festivities has been robbed from a location near the cathedral. The Carabinieri police force and Nuclear investigative team in Naples are on the case.

There are estimated to be four thieves according to press reports. The thieves, who entered the offices of the Curia next to the Cathedral, also took the video surveillance system, managing not to touch any sacred object or item of historical or religious interest.

Thankfully, the Holy treasures of the patron saint have been left untouched.
