WASHINGTON — FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva was due to meet with the head of the Mars corporation Thursday to discuss aflatoxin in food at the start of a whirlwind trip to the American capital designed to drum up support for him to change the UN agency rules and enjoy a third term, diplomatic sources said.

Graziano was arriving from Rome in time for the  "Our Oceans Conference 2016"  http://www.state.gov/e/oes/ocns/opa/ourocean/2016/ and brought along Arne Mattheson. The Brazilian DG was hoping to have time for a high level meeting with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, perhaps with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack or a deputy, on Friday.

After his lightning trip Graziano heads up to New York for the UN General Asembly next week, the sources said.

Mattheson is the Assistant Director General for Fisheries and Aquaculture. He is from Iceland.
