Free Airbnb shelter for earthquake survivors

Airbnb launches "Disaster response program" to help earthquake survivors

AMATRICE -- Airbnb hosts have opened up their homes to those affected by the earthquake which recently struck central Italy, with the period of “free accommodation” due to last until at least September 11.

According to Il Fatto Quotidiano newspaper, those who rent out spare rooms or entire homes through the American platform ‘Airbnb’ have opened their doors to survivors of the earthquake, with at least 20 listings already available. More owners are expected follow suit in the coming hours and days.

Airbnb has emailed hosts in the affected areas with information on how they can help those affected by the natural disaster. All costs will be cancelled for those staying in these homes until at least September 11, Airbnb reports.

This “disaster response” initiative was started by Airbnb in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy struck New York, after which Airbnb hosts in the affected area welcomed those in need into their homes.
