Young migrant fugitive travels 400km under truck

Young immigrant found strapped under truck

FERENTINO -- A young immigrant travelled 400 km on the A1 motorway strapped to the bottom of an articulated lorry, traffic police said.

The Frosinone traffic police received several telephone calls warning them of the presence of the young migrant under the truck which was driving northbound along the A1 motorway.

Despite high levels of holiday traffic on the road, the Frosinone road patrol unit managed to stop the lorry where the motorway passes Ferentino.

The young immigrant was found attached by straps to the underside of the lorry and was quickly released and taken to Frosinone hospital by health care services.

The police conducted a thorough inspection of the vehicle following the release of the fugitive.

Another young migrant was also found hidden under a tractor coming from Greece, this time an 18 year old Afghan boy who was trying to get to France. On being found by the police, he tried to escape but was blocked and escorted directly to the police station.

According to ANSA news agency, the young boy from Kabul was found on Tuesday in a service station by the Terni-Orte junction where the truck driver, unaware of the boy’s presence, had decided to break his journey.

The young fugitive, who was lying near the rear bumper of the truck, was noticed by a passer-by who alerted the authorities.

According to initial reports, he was trying to leave for France by sea. The Immigration Office will accompany him to a reception centre for immigrants seeking political asylum.
