COGNE -- The former President of the Chamber of Deputies, Luciano Violante, was rushed to the Parini di Aosta hospital on Thursday due to a serious illness.

According to the Italian newspaper the Messaggero, Violante was in the town of Cogne in the Aosta Valley at the time, where he usually spends his holidays, and was expected on Thursday morning at a public event in the centre of Aosta. His relatives called for help when he did not come to the event. Violante has had a CT scan and is reportedly still unconscious.

Violante was taken in a helicopter from Cogne to Aosta and arrived at the Parini di Aosta hospital at around nine am on Thursday morning.
