Northern League calls for "elimination" of Boldrini

Laura Boldrini, President of the Chamber of Deputies

VENICE -- A comment made on Facebook calling for the “physical elimination” of the President of the Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini by Monica Bars, head of the Northern League group in the town council at Musile di Piave in the province of Venice, has caused uproar on social media and has resulted in five members of parliament presenting a formal question to Minister of the Interior Angelino Alfano.

The five members of the Public Prosecution office, Zoggia, Mognato, Murer, Martella and Morettoclaimed that Bars’ comment on the social media site went “far beyond the limits of critical freedom of expression”. Bars posted on her facebook page “Boldrini to be physically eliminated”, a comment which caused outcry among the general public and politicians.

The controversial comment comes soon after the “outrageous” statement from Matteo Salvini, leader of the Northern League, when he likened Laura Boldrini to an “inflatable doll” during one of the party’s political rallies.

The right-wing anti-immigration Northern League was reacting to Boldrini’s position on recent events in Turkey, which she referred to as a “civilian coup”, calling for Europe to prepare to “receive Turkish refugees.”

Bars’ lawyer has defended her in saying that her Facebook post “referred to the removal of Boldrini from her political role and nothing else.”

Gianluca Forcolin, Deputy Governor of the Veneto region, who was mayor of Musile di Piave for nine years and is also a member of the Northern League, said that while he wanted to distance himself from “strong statements,” he believes that “Boldrini should be more balanced in taking up positions on immigration.”
