Community of Sant'Egidio follows refugees to Cracow

The community will be praying for peace across the world

CRACOW -- The Community of Sant’Egidio has voiced its solidarity for Syrian refugees, who are currently travelling towards Cracow with one of its international delegations. The Community says it will pray to put an end to conflict and they will put up a station of the Way of the Cross dedicated to Pope Francis, who will be arriving in Krakow on July 27.

“Every day, they put up warnings of terrorist attacks, before which we wish not to remain indifferent: we will remember, one by one, all the conflicts that are causing bloodshed in the world.”

Such are the words, on Facebook, of the young envoys from Sant’Egidio who are currently travelling towards Cracow.

The prayer for Peace will take place on Wednesday 27 July, at 7pm in the church of Our Lady of Lourdes, in ulica Misionarka 37, only a few hundred metres away from Blonia park where Pope Francis will be welcomed the day after. In charge of proceedings will be Archbishop of Bologna Matteo Zuppi. Besides the Syrian refugees, there will also be young people coming from other parts of the world currently experiencing difficulties, like Ukraine and Pakistan.

On Friday 29 July, meanwhile, in Blonia Park, the international delegation of the young Sant’Egidio envoys will light up the first Via Crucis station presided over by Pope Francis, which will be dedicated to the Works of Mercy, and particularly to the “welcoming of strangers.” Together with the Syrian refugees, the World Youth Day cross will be taken by a homeless polish couple, who have been able to get themselves off the street.
