The six Italians killed in the Nice attack

ROME -- The number of Italians killed in the terrorist attack in Nice has risen to six, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Tuesday. The French authorities have confirmed the official recognition of the six Italians, who have been named as Carla Gaveglio, Maria Grazia Ascoli, Gianna Muset, Angelo D'Agostino, Mario Casati and Nicolas Leslie.

The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, said that “the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses their closeness and solidarity with the family and friends of those killed in the barbaric attack in Nice. Their families have been informed and are receiving all the necessary assistance from the staff of our Consulate and also from the Crisis Management Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

Officers of the Bari police station have launched investigations into several citizens of Tunisian nationality who are living in the province of Bari, who are reportedly believed to have been in contact with Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, the man responsible for the attack in Nice which killed 84 people, within the weeks before he carried out the attack.

The investigations were launched following an alert from the French authorities who suspected suspicious contact between the Bari residents in question and Bouhlel. A 37 year old Tunisian man with a residence permit in France, who lives in the province of Bari, is among those being investigated.

The 37 year old was reportedly in contact with Bouhlel up until the morning of the attack, by means of messaging and phone calls, and the French authorities have asked the Italian anti-terrorism organisation to carry out checks on the 37 year old’s bank accounts.
